Soap Box Derby Terms & Conditions

The course will be situated on the Sowerby Flatts. The course will be about 200m long incorporating turns, ramps and other obstacles. The course is on the flat. Each team will have two timed runs around the course. Soapboxes will be crewed by one driver and two pushers only.

01 Disclaimer

  • The rules and regulations of the event have been drawn up for the benefit of the competitors and spectators and must be strictly adhered to.
  • The entry fee is non-refundable and soapboxes will only be allowed to race subject to rules of the event and scrutineering (see 2.9).
  • The organisers of the Thirsk & Sowerby Festival Soap Box Derby and the owners of the land do not accept any responsibility for any damage, loss or injury to the entrants or to the entrants' soapbox or equipment.
  • No expressed or implied warranty of safety shall result from the publication of or compliance with these rules and/or regulations or scrutineering.
  • This publication or scrutineering is in no way a guarantee against injury to team members, drivers, pushers, supporters or spectators and the organisers will not be held responsible for injury to team members.
  • Event organisers shall be allowed to impose any further restrictions and to permit deviations from any of these specifications. Any deviations from this specification are left to the discretion of the event
  • No expressed or implied warranty of safety shall result from any such deviation from this specification

02 General Conditions

  • Every team must accept these Rules and Regulations in full.
  • Three persons are allowed per team, with one driving the soapbox and two pushing at any one time.
  • Brightly coloured soapboxes, sponsorship and advertising are encouraged. "Naked" soapboxes consisting of chassis only will NOT be allowed.
  • Converted ride-on mowers and quad-type vehicles will NOT be allowed to compete.
  • Registration will commence at 10.00am hrs on the day of the event.
  • Driver and pusher briefing will commence at 10.30am on the day of the event.
  • Any contravention of the rules may lead to disqualification.
  • Organisers reserve the right to refuse entry.
  • Soapboxes and drivers will be scrutinised prior to each run.
  • Starter's decision is final.
  • Drivers must brake and exit the course promptly.
  • Inappropriate conduct may lead to disqualification.
  • All participants take part at their own risk.
  • Participants must be 18 or over on Sunday 2nd August.
  • Speed prizes awarded for fastest run and fastest average

03 Technical, Design & Structural

  • Maximum length: 2,400mm (8ft)
  • Maximum width: 1,800mm (6ft)
  • Construction must be of good standard.
  • No sharp edges or shatter-prone materials.
  • Drivers must remain seated.
  • Minimum three wheels.
  • Recommended ground clearance: 150mm.
  • Effective brakes required
  • Seating must be securely fixed.
  • One driver only, feet-first.
  • Two pushers only.
  • Steering and controls must minimise injury risk.
  • Prohibited steering methods listed (rope & plank, lean steering, etc.).
  • No motors, pedals, or stored energy allowed.
  • Roll bar required, minimum 35mm above

04 Safety Regulations

  • Safety is paramount.
  • Organisers may amend rules if required.
  • All team members must sign disclaimer.
  • No sharp edges.
  • No glass.
  • Briefing attendance mandatory.
  • Course walk required.
  • Scrutineers have full access.
  • Teams responsible for ongoing safety.
  • No warranty of safety

05 Personal Safety Requirments

  • Suitable abrasion-resistant clothing must be worn.
  • Neck support strongly advised.
  • Helmets mandatory for drivers and pushers

To qualify, your application must adhere to all rules. Thirsk & Sowerby Festival shall not be held responsible for costs incurred due to postponement or cancellation. All participants must sign the standard disclaimer prior to participation.
